Billy Vogel, Winner of the Inaugural DeepStacks Poker Tour Event!

Meredith McCannel talks with Billy Vogel just after his victory in the inaugural DeepStacks Poker Tour Main Event!

DeepStacks Poker Tour Seneca Niagara Final Table Recap

Billy Vogel

After a long two days of poker, it was time to gather the final six players on the poker stage to play down to the DeepStacks Poker Tour Western New York Poker Champion. Billy Vogel and Lou Procopio had a significant chip advantage over the four other players at the table but the structure allowed even the shortest stack a chance to work their way up the leaderboard.

Steve Przybyl began the day looking to improve on his 2nd place finish from this event last year but had a lot of work to get there. With just a small fraction of the chips in play, he didn't wait long to get his chips in the middle. Lou Procopio raised from the cutoff on the second hand of play and Przybyl moved all in from the big blind with [As][Jh]. Procopio called with [Qd][4d] and went ahead for good on the Queen-high flop. Przybyl was eliminated in 6th place for $13,359.

Tom Krol was the next to exit and never really had a chance to get much going from the start. He found a spot to double up but ran a big hand against Billy Vogel. In a limped pot, blinds versus blinds, Krol opened for 50,000 on the [Jd][Ts][7c] flop and Vogel put him all-in. After some contemplation, Krol called his last 193,000 with [Jh][3s] for top pair versus Vogel's [Qc][9h] and open ended straight draw. The turn [Ks] locked up the hand for Vogel and Krol was eliminated in 5th for $17,802.

Michael Wachowski began with the second shortest stack but that did not stop him from splashing those chips around. Some three-bet shoves and a well timed river bluff gave him some chips to play with 4-handed but he tried it one too many times. Wachowski check raised the [Qh][4d][2h] flop against Billy Vogel and then shoved his last 343,000 on the [2c] turn. Vogel thought for a bit before calling with [Qc][9s] for top pair Wachowski just said, "You got me". His [Kh][7s] needed a miracle King on the river which did not appear. Wachowski was knocked out in 4th place for $22,245.

Three handed play began with Vogel and Procopio holding most of the chips while Nick Goetz behind more the 2-to-1 against both. Sensing neither of the big stacks wanted to play big pots against each other, Goetz built his stack up with a series of all-ins to get himself back into contention. Play continued with very few flops and even fewer showdowns until Goetz lost a big pot to Procopio leaving him once again short. He open shoved his remaining 425,000 and was called by Billy Vogel in the small blind with Procopio folding after long consideration.

Goetz found himself far behind Vogel with [Qh][Tc] versus [Ah][Ts]. The flop was [9c][4d][2s] was little help but the [Jd] gave him a good sweat on the river. The [Td] on the river was no help and jovial 21 year old was eliminated in 3rd place for $31,161.

After a quick dinner break, Vogel and Procopio returned for the Championship heads up battle with near identical stacks. Procopio with the small lead at 2,845,000 against Vogel's 2,620,000 with blinds at 20,000/40,000 and 5,000 ante.

With such deep stacks in play, we did not expect fireworks too early in the match but were proven wrong. Procopio limped from the small blind in an early pot only to have Vogel raise it up to 100,000. Vogel led out for 90,000 after the [Ac][Kc][7s] flop which Procopio called, and another 200,000 bet after the [6d] on the turn. Procopio cut out his chips several times before making the call to see a [Ts] river. Vogel bet 640,000 giving Procopio plenty to think about, and eventually call. Vogel tabled [9h][8h] for a straight and Procopio mucked his hand. That put Vogel up to 3,700,000 and Procopio down to 1,700,000.

There were only a few minor hands where chips were shuffled back towards Procopio before he finally lost enough to three-bet his last 700,000 chips in the middle with [Qs][Jd] and Vogel called with [Kh][4h]. The board ran out clean with [8h][8d][3s][3h][9d] eliminating Lou Procopio in 2nd place for $43,928 and making Billy Vogel the DeepStacks Poker Tour Western New York Poker Champion.

Vogel collects his title along with the trophy and $71,825.

End of Day 2 Report and Final Table Profiles

Day 2 of the DeepStacks Poker Tour Western New York Poker Championship began with 42 players looking to make the money, the final table, and the ultimate goal to win the $71,827 first place prize in front of the television cameras. The play was quick to begin the day as the shorter stacks were looking to build themselves up to make a run and the big stacks were taking advantage of the approaching money bubble.

Reigning champion Randy Pfeifer began the day with a top ten chip stack but was unable defend his title and was done before the bubble popped. Last year's runnerup Steve Przybyl began the day as one of the shorter stacks but built it up throughout the day to give himself a chance to improve on the result from last year.

Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi began with the chip lead and played a key role in getting the field into the money. With 25 players remaining and only 24 getting paid, the tournament was playing hand-for-hand when the big hand occurred on the feature table. Mizrachi raised in early position with one caller before Robert "Hoss" Colao moved all-in. Kyaw Naing, holding the chiplead not long before, then decided to raise the excitement by shoving in over the top of Colao with two players yet to act. Mizrachi thought for awhile before adding to the party by shoving himself and pushing Lou Procopio out of the pot and we were underway.

Mizrachi was completely dominated with [Ad][Jd] versus the [Jc][Js] of Colao and [Ac][Qc] of Naing. It would take a miracle and it began with a [Ts][9h][8c] flop and the 7s turn provided a chopped pot with Colao and sending Naing to the rail.

The tournament kept to form after the money bubble burst, the players who snuck into the money with just a few chips were putting them in the middle hoping for a courtesy double up or walk to the casino cage. Regardless of the structure, the short-handed format still provided plenty of action for friends and family on the rail.

Play would not slow down until the unofficial final 7 gathered at the feature table to determine who would play in front of the cameras on Sunday afternoon. After a valiant effort with the shortstack to double up a few times, Husni "John" Aga was finally eliminated at the hands of chipleader Billy Vogel to end play for the evening.

The final table will return on Sunday to play on the TV table to shoot for the Championship and the $71,827 first place money.

Final Table Chip counts and seat assignments:

Seat 1: Steve Przybyl - 179,000
Seat 2: Tom Krol - 577,000

24th - Andy Spears - $2,869

Steve Przybyl - Cheektowaga, NY - 179,000

The 31 year old poker player began Day 2 with one of the smaller stacks but found a way to triple up with a big hand. He was all-in with Q-T on a Q44 board but drawing slim against Aces and 6-4. The turn was a Queen to keep his hopes alive and move on to the final table. Przybyl is looking to improve his performance in the Championship from 2011 when he finished 2nd to Randy Pfeifer.

Tom Krol - Lake View, NY - 577,000

Krol is a lawyer by trade but is finding great success as he makes his first major final table. He began the day in the middle of the chip counts but doubled up early after flopping a full house with 33. He came out to play the DeepStacks Poker Tour Western New York Poker Championship to battle against the quality of players the tournament attracts as well as the participation of Michael Mizrachi and Mike Matusow.

Billy Vogel - Stockport, NY - 2,097,000

Vogel started this tournament on his 28th birthday with little sleep but his final present is still waiting. He'll come to the final with the chip lead and looking to finish it off. He was below the average chip count at the start of play but made his way through the field and eventually took the chip lead getting them all-in with AK versus the JT of Nachman Berlin just before the final table was set.

Lou Procopio - Liverpool, NY - 1,955,00

Procopio has been playing the game for 13 years with plenty of results but he is looking for his biggest tournament payday. His day began near the top of the leaderboard but it took a bit of luck to make it this far. With the tournament down to 3 tables, Procopio found himself drawing thin getting all-in with Kings versus Jonathan Dimmig's Aces. The turned King kept him alive and built his stack to over 1,000,000. He will begin the final table 2nd in chips.

Nicholas Goetz - Williamsville, NY - 437,000

Goetz got to this point in the tournament cheaper than the rest. The 21 year old player won his way into the Championship via a $55 satellite. Goetz began Day 2 with 71,500 chips but 30,000 of those came courtesy of Michael Mizrachi when he picked off his bluff attempt late on Day 1. This tournament is a step in the right direction for Goetz to start his dream job of being a professional poker player.

Michael Wachowski - Buffalo, NY - 233,000

Wachowski took the short ride from Buffalo to play in his first televised tournament. He began Day 2 firmly in the middle of the pack but came close to missing the money. Just 4 players away from the bubble, he found himself in a tough position looking for a miracle and got there with running straight cards to double up and make it through to the final table. When asked about his dream job, he stated "Poker dealer. So I can get some of my money back." Right now he is guaranteed to get $13,359 of it.

The DeepStacks Main Event End of Day One Report

Today began the first ever event on the new DeepStacks Poker Tour and the Western New York Poker Championship, visiting Seneca Casino in Niagara Falls, NY. The Championship had a $200,000 guarantee for a $1,500 buyin, a structure designed to provide plenty of play, and a field which contained many DeepStacks Pros along with players from around the state and country.

There was excitement in the room as ESPN Poker's Lon McEachern kicked things off and cameras were roaming the field during the day catching great action as well as entertainment on the feature table. Players began with 25,000 in chips and 50 minutes levels.

When registration closed, 217 players were registered for the tournament creating a $281,232 prizepool with winner collecting over $70,000 and the top 24 finishing in the money. DeepStacks Pros were represented by Mike Matusow, Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi, Adam "Roothlus" Levy, Karina Jett, Tristan "Cre8ive" Wade, Randal Flowers, and Jay Houston. Reigning champion Randy Pfeifer was also back in the mix looking to defend his title. 2010 Senenca Niagara Player of the Year Travell Thomas was also making noise, with his play and his talk, sitting opposite of "The Mouth" for much of the day.

It was a rough day for the big names pros as only Mizrachi is the only one to make it through to Day 2. Matusow spent most of his time sitting at the feature table above the Seneca Casino floor and was scrapping it up with Mizrachi on several occasions, and it was Mizrachi who eventually ended his day when QT outflopped Matusow's Aces.

Adam "Roothlus" Levy was sent to the rail courtesy of Aces as well. In this case he was the one facing them with AK and found no help against occasional chip leader Jonathan Dimmig. Karina Jett's day came to end after finding herself short-stacked on the wrong end of a bad beat KK falling to AK leaving just Mizrachi to represent the DeepStacks Pros.

Played ended with just 42 players remaining in the tournament and they will return tomorrow at 2:30pm. The average chip stack is around 130,000 and they are scheduled to continue play until they have their final table six. Listed below are the Top Ten Day 2 chip counts.

Michael Mizrachi - 338,500
Sammy Smith - 303,500
